The ASUS Prime B840M-A WiFi is a Micro-ATX AM5 motherboard built on the AMD B840 chipset, supporting Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series processors. It features an 8+2+1 phase power design with discrete MOSFETs, four DDR5 DIMM slots for up to 256 GB with EXPO/AEMP support, three M.2 slots, four SATA ports, Realtek 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3, dual DisplayPort and HDMI on the rear, two rear USB 10 Gbps Type-A ports, a front USB 5 Gbps Type-C header, BIOS FlashBack, and Aura Sync RGB — a compact, well-specified B840 Micro-ATX board for mainstream AM5 builds.

ASUS Prime Engineering in a Micro-ATX Footprint

The Prime B840M-A WiFi brings the same ASUS Prime DNA found on the ATX B840-Plus WiFi into a 244 mm × 244 mm Micro-ATX form factor, making it a strong option for compact builds where ATX clearance isn’t available but no meaningful compromise on feature set is wanted. The 8+2+1 phase power design with discrete MOSFETs and DIGI+ VRM provides stable, efficient power delivery for the full Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 lineup up to 170W TDP. A single 8-pin ATX12V connector handles CPU power — clean, simple, and compatible with virtually any modern PSU. The VRM heatsink, SafeSlot reinforced primary PCIe slot, stainless steel I/O panel, premium audio capacitors with dedicated PCB layers, and audio shielding all carry over from the ATX sibling without compromise.

The B840 chipset does not support CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking via AMD EXPO and ASUS AEMP profiles is supported up to DDR5-7600+ (OC). If CPU OC headroom is a requirement, B850 is the next step up.

The 8+2+1 discrete MOSFET VRM is best matched to 65–105W TDP processors for sustained workloads. 170W-rated CPUs are supported at stock but represent the upper comfort boundary for this power stage.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB with AMD EXPO and ASUS AEMP profile support, reaching DDR5-7600+ (OC). Storage across three M.2 slots is well distributed: M2_1 is CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) in 2280 form factor, M2_2 is also CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) and notably supports shorter 2242 and 2260 drives in addition to 2280 — useful for smaller drives or repurposed laptop SSDs. M2_3 is chipset-connected at PCIe 3.0 x4 (32 Gb/s) and supports standard 2280 only. All three slots include M.2 heatsink coverage. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports are available for traditional drives, and RAID support follows the same CPU-generation-dependent pattern as the B840-Plus: RAID 0/1/5/10 on Ryzen 9000, RAID 0/1/10 on Ryzen 7000, and RAID 0/1 only on Ryzen 8000.

M2_2 drops from PCIe 4.0 x4 to x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 processors. Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs run both CPU-connected M.2 slots at the full PCIe 4.0 x4 rate.

No PCIe Gen5 M.2 slot is present — the fastest M.2 tier is PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s). If Gen5 NVMe is a priority, a B850 or X870 board is required.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear I/O panel offers a notably strong display output for a Micro-ATX board at this tier: dual DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 8K 30Hz each) plus HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) covers triple-display iGPU setups for Ryzen 8000 G-series builds. Rear USB consists of two USB 10 Gbps Type-A and four USB 2.0 Type-A ports, with a USB 5 Gbps Type-C port also on the rear — seven rear ports total. Front panel USB is well covered with a USB 5 Gbps Type-C header plus a standard USB 5 Gbps header supporting two additional ports. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 2×2 MU-MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard, with Realtek 2.5G LANGuard Ethernet for wired connectivity. Fan headers include one CPU fan, one CPU OPT, one AIO pump, and three chassis fan headers. Three Addressable Gen 2 (ARGB) headers provide Aura Sync lighting control. Additional internal headers include S/PDIF out, COM port, SPI TPM, and a Clear CMOS header.

The primary PCIe 4.0 x16 GPU slot drops to x8/x4 mode with Ryzen 8000 Series processors. The two chipset-side PCIe 3.0 x16 slots run at x1 mode only — suitable for network cards, capture cards, and similar low-bandwidth add-ins, not additional GPUs.

Integrated display output (HDMI and DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those builds.

The Gigabyte B850 Gaming WiFi6 is a full ATX AM5 motherboard built on the AMD B850 chipset, supporting Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series processors. It features a 6+2+2 phase digital VRM on a 6-layer PCB, four DDR5 DIMM slots for up to 256 GB with EXPO/XMP support, a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots with Thermal Guard, four SATA ports, Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.3, a PCIe 5.0 x16 GPU slot, rear USB Gen2 Type-A, six fan headers, three ARGB headers, EZ-Latch Plus on the PCIe x16 slot, and Q-Flash Plus — a budget-friendly B850 ATX platform with wireless and Gen5 storage.

B850 ATX Essentials with Wi-Fi 6

The B850 Gaming WiFi6 is Gigabyte’s entry-level B850 full ATX offering, delivering the AM5 platform’s two headline advantages — CPU overclocking support and PCIe Gen5 bandwidth — with built-in Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 at an accessible price. The 6+2+2 phase digital VRM on a 6-layer, mid-loss PCB with VRM Thermal Armor Advanced covers mainstream Ryzen builds cleanly within its power delivery limits, and the generous six fan headers (including a CPU pump and system pump header) give this board more cooling control than its price tier would typically suggest. EZ-Latch Plus on the primary PCIe x16 slot handles tool-free GPU removal, and Q-Flash Plus allows BIOS updates without any CPU or RAM installed. The WIFI EZ-Plug simplifies antenna installation over traditional threaded connectors, and the directional ultra-high-gain antenna design maximises wireless range.

CPU overclocking is supported on B850, but the 6+2+2 VRM is best suited to 65W TDP processors under sustained load. 105W CPUs run at stock without issue, but sustained all-core overclocking on high-TDP Ryzen 9 processors is outside the comfort zone of this power stage. The B850 Eagle WiFi6E or B850 Aorus Elite AX are the appropriate steps up for heavy OC use.

The onboard wireless is Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax, 2.4/5 GHz, 80 MHz) — not Wi-Fi 6E. The 6 GHz band is not supported. If tri-band Wi-Fi 6E or 6 GHz is a requirement, the B850 Eagle WiFi6E is the appropriate alternative.

LAN speed is 1 Gigabit only — this board does not include 2.5GbE. All other B850 boards in this range include 2.5GbE; this is the exception.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8200 (OC). M2A_CPU is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, supporting 22110 and 2280 form factors, with M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink. M2B_CPU is CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, also supporting 22110 and 2280, and drops to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2. M2C_SB is chipset-connected at PCIe 4.0 x2 (32 Gb/s), supporting 22110 and 2280. All three M.2 slots include M.2 Thermal Guard heatsinks with 5 W/mk thermal pads. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional storage, with RAID 0/1/5/10 for NVMe (RAID 5 on Ryzen 9000 only) and RAID 0/1/10 for SATA.

M2A_CPU drops from PCIe 5.0 x4 to PCIe 4.0 x4 with all Ryzen 8000 variants. M2B_CPU drops to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2. Full Gen5 M.2 speeds require Ryzen 7000 or 9000.

M2C_SB (chipset, PCIe 4.0 x2 at 32 Gb/s) is best suited to secondary NVMe storage rather than a primary high-performance drive.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O provides nine USB ports: one USB Type-C Gen1 (5 Gbps, CPU), two USB Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps, red, CPU), two USB Gen1 Type-A (5 Gbps, chipset), and four USB 2.0 Type-A (chipset), alongside DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 144Hz), HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz), a PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port, and Q-Flash Plus button. Front panel connectivity includes a USB Type-C Gen1 header (5 Gbps), a Gen1 header (2 ports), and two USB 2.0 headers (4 ports). Realtek 1GbE handles wired networking. Wi-Fi 6 (Realtek RTL8851BE, 802.11ax, 2.4/5 GHz, 80 MHz) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard with WIFI EZ-Plug antenna connectors. Fan headers total six: CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT/pump, three system fan headers, and one system fan/pump header, all 4-pin PWM/DC with Smart Fan 6 and FAN STOP. RGB Fusion 2.0 is supported via three Addressable Gen2 (ARGB) headers and one standard RGB LED header.

No debug LEDs, no Multi-Key button, and no onboard reset button are present on this board. For those features at the B850 ATX tier, the B850 Eagle WiFi6E or Eagle Ice is the step up.

Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.

It features an 8+2+1 phase power design with discrete MOSFETs, two DDR5 DIMM slots for up to 128 GB with EXPO/AEMP support, a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, four SATA ports, a PCIe 5.0 x16 GPU slot, Realtek 2.5G LAN, BIOS FlashBack, and Aura Sync RGB — a no-frills B850 board that brings PCIe 5.0 storage and CPU overclocking support to budget-conscious AM5 builds.

B850’s Key Upgrades in the Most Compact Package

The Prime B850M-K is ASUS’s entry point into the B850 chipset, and it earns its place by delivering the two most meaningful upgrades B850 brings over B840: CPU overclocking support and a PCIe 5.0 x16 primary GPU slot (with Ryzen 7000/9000). Packaged into a slightly narrower Micro-ATX footprint at 244 mm × 221 mm — smaller than the standard 244 mm × 244 mm Micro-ATX size — it fits chassis with tighter board clearances while retaining the core ASUS Prime build quality standards: DIGI+ VRM, LANGuard, SafeSlot reinforced primary PCIe slot, audio shielding with premium capacitors and dedicated PCB layers, stainless steel rear I/O, and a VRM heatsink. The 8+2+1 phase discrete MOSFET power stage handles the mainstream Ryzen range cleanly within its rated 170W CPU envelope, with a single 8-pin ATX12V connector keeping power delivery simple.

CPU overclocking is supported on B850. However, the 8+2+1 discrete MOSFET power stage is best matched to 65–105W TDP processors for sustained workloads. Higher-wattage Ryzen 9 chips at stock are within spec, but extended all-core overclocking on 170W processors pushes this VRM to its limits. Ensure good case airflow over the VRM area for any OC workloads.

Memory and Storage

Two DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 128 GB, with EXPO and ASUS AEMP profiles enabling DDR5-8200+ (OC) on Ryzen 9000, DDR5-9600+ (OC) on Ryzen 8000, and DDR5-8000+ (OC) on Ryzen 7000 — the Ryzen 8000 OC ceiling is notably higher here than on B840 boards. M2_1 is a CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x4 slot (128 Gb/s) with an M.2 heatsink, delivering full Gen5 NVMe speeds with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs. M2_2 is a CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x4 slot (64 Gb/s) supporting 2242, 2260, and 2280 form factors, also with heatsink coverage. There is no third M.2 slot — chipset-connected M.2 storage is absent on this board. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports cover traditional drives. RAID support is CPU-generation dependent: RAID 0/1/5/10 on Ryzen 9000, RAID 0/1/10 on Ryzen 7000, and RAID 0/1 only on Ryzen 8000.

Only two M.2 slots are present — there is no chipset-connected third M.2 slot. Builds requiring three or more M.2 drives will need to use SATA SSDs for the additional slots, or step up to a board with a third M.2 slot such as the B840M-A or B850M-A WiFi.

M2_1 runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000, but drops to PCIe 4.0 x4 with all Ryzen 8000 variants. M2_2 drops from PCIe 4.0 x4 to x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 processors.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O is clean and practical: two USB 10 Gbps Type-A and two USB 5 Gbps Type-A ports sit alongside four USB 2.0 Type-A ports — eight rear USB ports total, all Type-A with no rear Type-C. DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 8K 30Hz) and HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) serve iGPU-equipped processors. A legacy PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port is present on the rear for enterprise and legacy peripheral users. Realtek 2.5G LANGuard Ethernet handles wired networking, and BIOS FlashBack enables firmware updates without CPU or RAM installed. Front panel USB is handled by a USB 5 Gbps Type-C header and a standard 5 Gbps header for two additional ports. Fan headers consist of one CPU fan header and three chassis fan headers — no CPU OPT or AIO pump header. Three Addressable Gen 2 (ARGB) headers support Aura Sync RGB. Additional internal headers include S/PDIF out, COM port, and SPI TPM.

No Wi-Fi is onboard — this is a wired-only board with no M.2 Key E slot for a wireless module. A USB or PCIe Wi-Fi adapter will be needed if wireless connectivity is required.

No AIO pump header or CPU OPT header is present — just a single CPU_FAN1 and three chassis fan headers. AIO cooler pump cables can be connected to a chassis fan header, but these are typically limited to lower current ratings than a dedicated pump header. Verify your AIO cooler is compatible with this configuration.

Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those builds.

B840 ATX with Wi-Fi 7, Built for Gaming

The B840 Gaming Plus WiFi is MSI’s mainstream B840 ATX offering, bringing full Wi-Fi 7 tri-band wireless with MLO (Multi-Link Operation) support, Realtek 2.5GbE LAN, and PCIe 4.0 platform performance to a full ATX form factor at an accessible price point. The 7+2+1 phase Direct CPU power design uses Core Boost technology with 7 W/mk MOSFET thermal pads and an Extended Heatsink with additional choke thermal pads — Frozr Guard thermal management is MSI’s approach to sustained power delivery efficiency at this VRM tier. CUDIMM support (clock-driven UDIMM) is a notable addition for boards at this price, allowing DDR5 memory with on-module clock buffers to reach higher stable frequencies. Both M.2 slots carry EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II heatsinks with tool-free latch clips for simple SSD installation and removal, and the PCIe 4.0 x16 primary slot features Steel Armor reinforcement. The rear I/O includes a Flash BIOS Button for firmware updates without CPU or RAM, and a Clear CMOS button for recovery — both useful for first-time platform builds.

The B840 chipset does not support CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking via EXPO profiles is supported up to DDR5-8000+ (OC). If CPU OC is needed, step up to a B850 board.

The 7+2+1 Direct VRM is best suited to 65W TDP processors for sustained workloads. Higher-TDP Ryzen 9 chips will run at stock, but sustained heavy all-core loads push this power stage to its limits.

Wi-Fi 7 features (including MLO and the 6 GHz band) require Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Bluetooth 5.4 also requires Windows 11 24H2. On earlier Windows versions, the adapter operates at Wi-Fi 6E speeds.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 UDIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8000+ (OC) in optimal configurations with Ryzen 9000. CUDIMM support in clock driver bypass mode is available — note that POR boot frequency and compatibility may vary by CPU series. Two M.2 slots are both CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4: M2_1 supports 2280 and 2260, while M2_2 supports 22110, 2280, and 2260. Both are covered by EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II heatsinks. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional storage, with RAID 0/1/10 for SATA and RAID 0/1 for NVMe.

No PCIe Gen5 M.2 slot is present — the fastest M.2 tier is PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s). For Gen5 NVMe speeds, a B850 board is required.

M2_2 drops from PCIe 4.0 x4 to PCIe 3.0 x4 with Ryzen 8700/8600/8400 processors, and further to PCIe 3.0 x2 with Ryzen 8500/8300. The primary GPU slot (PCI_E1) also drops from PCIe 4.0 x16 to x8 and x4 respectively with those Ryzen 8000 Phoenix variants.

Only two M.2 slots are present. Three-drive NVMe builds will need SATA for the additional drive.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear panel provides a well-specified USB stack for the price: one USB 10 Gbps Type-A, one USB 10 Gbps Type-C, two USB 5 Gbps Type-A, and four USB 2.0 — nine ports total. Only a single HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) display output is available — there is no DisplayPort on the rear panel. Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 320 MHz, MU-MIMO, MLO, 4KQAM, up to 5.8 Gbps) and Bluetooth 5.4 are handled by a pre-installed module in the M.2 Key-E slot, alongside Realtek 8125BG 2.5GbE LAN. Front panel headers include two USB 5 Gbps Type-A, one USB 5 Gbps Type-C, and four USB 2.0. Fan headers total six: one CPU, one combo fan/pump, and four system fan headers. RGB is covered by two Addressable V2 (ARGB) headers and one standard RGB LED header via Mystic Light, plus an EZ Conn header (JAF_1) for daisy-chain lighting. Four EZ Debug LEDs (CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT) provide boot diagnostics, and a Tuning Controller connector (JDASH) supports MSI’s external OC dashboard accessory.

No DisplayPort is present on this board — the sole display output is HDMI 2.1. Monitors requiring DisplayPort will need a discrete GPU.

The Wireless module occupies the M.2 Key-E slot — no additional wireless module can be installed.

Integrated display output (HDMI 2.1) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.

B650 ATX Foundations with Wi-Fi and PCIe 5.0 Storage

The B650 Eagle AX is Gigabyte’s entry-level B650 full ATX offering, aimed at builders who want the AM5 platform, PCIe Gen5 M.2 storage, Wi-Fi 6E, and CPU overclocking capability without paying for AORUS-tier VRM or connectivity. The 12+2+2 phase digital VRM provides stable and efficient power delivery for mainstream Ryzen builds, with M.2 Thermal Guard heatsinks covering all three M.2 slots to keep NVMe thermals in check. EZ-Latch on the primary PCIe x16 slot enables tool-free graphics card removal, and Q-Flash Plus allows BIOS updates without any CPU or RAM installed — useful for preparing the board ahead of a Ryzen 9000 installation. The WIFI EZ-Plug design (rev 1.2) simplifies Wi-Fi antenna installation compared to traditional threaded SMA connectors.

CPU overclocking is supported on B650. The 12+2+2 VRM with 60A MOSFETs handles the mainstream Ryzen 7000/9000 lineup at stock confidently and supports moderate CPU overclocking on 65–105W processors. Sustained all-core overclocking on high-TDP Ryzen 9 chips is outside the comfort zone of this power stage — consider the B650 Aorus Elite AX or higher for heavy OC use.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8000 (OC). The first M.2 slot (M2A_CPU) is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, supporting up to the extended 25110 form factor. The second slot (M2P_CPU) is also CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, supporting up to 25110. The third slot (M2C_SB) is chipset-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (32 Gb/s typical, x2 in some configurations), supporting up to 22110. All three M.2 slots are covered by M.2 Thermal Guard heatsinks. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional storage, and RAID 0/1/10 is supported for both SATA and NVMe.

M2A_CPU drops from PCIe 5.0 x4 to 4.0 x4 with all Ryzen 8000 variants. M2P_CPU drops to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 processors. For maximum NVMe bandwidth, Ryzen 7000 or 9000 is recommended.

M2C_SB (chipset) supports PCIe 4.0 x4 or x2 depending on system configuration. Sharing bandwidth with chipset PCIe lanes may affect available bandwidth when multiple chipset devices are active simultaneously.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O provides nine USB ports: two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps, red — one doubles as Q-Flash Plus port), one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C (5 Gbps), two USB 2.0 from the chipset, and four USB 2.0 via hub. DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 serve iGPU-equipped processors, and a PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port covers legacy peripherals. Front panel connectivity includes a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C header (5 Gbps) and a USB 3.2 Gen1 header for two further Type-A ports — there is no USB Gen2x2 front panel header on this board. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 2T2R MU-MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard. Fan headers consist of one CPU fan, one CPU fan/pump, two system fan headers, and one system fan/pump header — five total, all 4-pin with PWM/DC and Smart Fan 6 control. RGB is covered by three Addressable Gen2 (ARGB) headers and one standard RGB header via RGB Fusion 2.0.

LAN is 1 Gigabit only — this board does not include 2.5GbE. If faster wired networking is a priority, a USB 2.5GbE adapter or a board with onboard 2.5G such as the B650 Aorus Elite AX should be considered.

No USB Gen2x2 (20 Gbps) Type-C header is present — the front panel USB-C header runs at Gen1 (5 Gbps). The rear Type-C is also Gen1 at 5 Gbps. The fastest rear USB ports are the two Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps) red ports.

EZ-Latch is present on the PCIe x16 slot only — M.2 slots use conventional screws, not EZ-Latch Plus as found on the Aorus Elite AX.

Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.

The ASUS Prime B840-Plus WiFi is a full ATX AM5 motherboard built on the AMD B840 chipset, supporting Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series processors. It features an 8+2+1 phase power design with discrete MOSFETs, four DDR5 DIMM slots for up to 256 GB with EXPO/AEMP support, three M.2 slots, four SATA ports, Realtek 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3, rear USB 10 Gbps Type-A and Type-C, BIOS FlashBack, and Aura Sync RGB — a straightforward, feature-complete B840 ATX board for everyday Ryzen builds.

Reliable AM5 Foundations with ASUS Prime Polish

The Prime B840-Plus WiFi is ASUS’s entry-level 800-series ATX offering, bringing the B840 chipset to a full ATX form factor with the build-quality touches ASUS Prime is known for: DIGI+ VRM, LANGuard surge protection, SafeSlot reinforced PCIe slot, audio shielding with dedicated PCB layers, and a pre-mounted I/O shield for cleaner installation. The 8+2+1 phase power design with discrete MOSFETs is honest entry-level fare — stable and efficient for mainstream Ryzen 7000/9000 builds, with support for CPUs up to 170W TDP. An 8-pin plus optional 4-pin ATX12V connector configuration provides flexibility for a range of builds without over-speccing power delivery for the chipset tier.

The B840 chipset does not support CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking via AMD EXPO and ASUS AEMP profiles is supported. If CPU OC is a requirement, step up to B850 or X870.

The 8+2+1 discrete MOSFET power stage is best suited to 65–105W TDP processors. It will run 170W-rated CPUs at stock, but sustained heavy all-core workloads on top-end Ryzen 9 chips are outside the optimal operating range of this VRM. For high-TDP builds, consider the B850 tier.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and ASUS AEMP profile support for memory overclocking up to DDR5-7600+ (OC). Three M.2 slots cover the mainstream storage range: M2_1 and M2_2 are CPU-connected and run at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000 processors, while M2_3 is chipset-connected at PCIe 3.0 x4 (32 Gb/s) and supports shorter 2242 and 2260 form factors in addition to 2280. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports are available for additional drives. RAID support varies by CPU generation: Ryzen 9000 supports RAID 0/1/5/10, Ryzen 7000 supports RAID 0/1/10, and Ryzen 8000 supports RAID 0/1 only.

M2_2 drops from PCIe 4.0 x4 to x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 processors. Ryzen 9000 and 7000 CPUs run both M2_1 and M2_2 at the full PCIe 4.0 x4 rate.

No M.2 slots on this board reach PCIe Gen5 speeds — M2_1 and M2_2 top out at Gen4 x4 (64 Gb/s). If PCIe Gen5 M.2 storage is a priority, look to B850 or X870 boards.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O is well-rounded for the chipset tier: USB 10 Gbps Type-C and Type-A ports sit alongside two USB 5 Gbps Type-A and four USB 2.0 Type-A ports, plus HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) and DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 8K 30Hz) for iGPU-equipped processors. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 2×2 MU-MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard, alongside Realtek 2.5G LANGuard-protected Ethernet. A BIOS FlashBack button allows firmware updates without a CPU or RAM installed. Front panel connectivity includes a USB 5 Gbps Type-C header and a standard USB 5 Gbps header for two additional ports. Fan headers are generous: one CPU fan, one CPU OPT, one AIO pump, and four chassis fan headers. RGB support is provided via three Addressable Gen 2 (ARGB) headers with Aura Sync and Aura Creator compatibility. Bonus internal headers include a Thunderbolt/USB4 header, S/PDIF out, COM port, and SPI TPM.

The primary PCIe 4.0 x16 GPU slot runs at full x16 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors but drops to x8 or x4 with Ryzen 8000 Series CPUs. The chipset-side PCIe 3.0 slots also share bandwidth — the x4 slot (PCIEX16(G3)_2) drops to x1 mode when any of the adjacent chipset x16(G3)_1/3 or x1(G3) slots are occupied.

Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those builds.

B650 ATX at Its Most Accessible

The B650 UD AX is the entry point of Gigabyte’s B650 ATX lineup, designed for builders who want Socket AM5 with CPU overclocking support and PCIe Gen5 M.2 storage without stepping into Eagle or Aorus-tier pricing. The 6+2+2 phase digital VRM is honest about its positioning — it delivers clean, stable power for everyday Ryzen builds and moderate overclocking on lower-TDP processors, without the thermal headroom of the Eagle or Aorus stablemates. EZ-Latch on the primary PCIe x16 slot makes graphics card removal tool-free, and Q-Flash Plus enables BIOS updates without any CPU or RAM installed. The UD series carries Gigabyte’s Ultra Durable badge, reflecting solid PCB and component quality standards at the price point.

The 6+2+2 VRM is best suited to 65W TDP processors under sustained load. 105W CPUs will run at stock without issue, but sustained high-TDP workloads are outside the comfort zone of this power stage. High-wattage Ryzen 9 builds or aggressive CPU overclocking should be directed toward the B650 Eagle AX or B650 Aorus Elite AX instead.

CPU overclocking is supported on B650. However, the modest VRM makes this board most appropriate for memory OC (EXPO/XMP) and light CPU tuning rather than sustained all-core frequency pushing.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8000 (OC). The first M.2 slot (M2A_CPU) is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, supporting up to the extended 25110 form factor alongside 2580, 22110, and 2280. The second slot (M2P_CPU) is CPU-connected but runs at PCIe 4.0 x2 (32 Gb/s) across all supported CPU generations — this is a meaningful bandwidth limitation and worth factoring into primary drive placement. It supports 22110 and 2280 form factors. The third slot (M2C_SB) is chipset-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 and supports 22110 and 2280. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional storage, and RAID 0/1/10 is supported for both SATA and NVMe.

M2P_CPU is limited to PCIe 4.0 x2 (32 Gb/s) regardless of which CPU is installed — this applies to Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 alike. This is notably slower than the PCIe 4.0 x4 found on M2P_CPU slots on higher-tier boards. Use M2A_CPU as the primary drive and reserve M2P_CPU for secondary or less performance-critical NVMe storage.

M2A_CPU drops from PCIe 5.0 x4 to PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 with all Ryzen 8000 variants.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O provides nine USB ports: two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps, red — one also serving as the Q-Flash Plus port), one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C (5 Gbps), two chipset USB 2.0, and four USB 2.0 via hub. DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 144Hz) and HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) serve iGPU-equipped processors. A PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port is also present on the rear. Front panel connectivity includes a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C header (5 Gbps) and a USB 3.2 Gen1 header for two further Type-A ports. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax, 2.4/5 GHz only — no 6 GHz band) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard via Realtek RTL8851, alongside Realtek 1GbE for wired networking. Fan headers consist of one CPU fan, one CPU fan/pump, two system fan headers, and one system fan/pump header — five total with Smart Fan 6 PWM/DC control and FAN STOP. RGB is provided via one Addressable Gen2 (ARGB) header and one standard RGB header.

Wi-Fi 6 is onboard, not Wi-Fi 6E — the 6 GHz band is not supported. If the 6 GHz band or tri-band Wi-Fi is important, the B650 Eagle AX (Wi-Fi 6E) is the step up.

LAN is 1 Gigabit only — no 2.5GbE.

No USB Gen2x2 port is present on either the rear panel or as a front panel header.

Only one ARGB header and one RGB header are present — significantly fewer than the Eagle AX (3× ARGB) or Aorus Elite AX (2× ARGB, 2× RGB). Plan RGB lighting accordingly.

Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.

B850 Micro-ATX Essentials with PCIe Gen5 Storage

The B850M D3HP is Gigabyte’s entry-level B850 Micro-ATX offering, bringing the chipset’s two headline advantages — CPU overclocking support and PCIe Gen5 M.2 bandwidth — to a compact footprint at a budget-friendly price. It shares the same dual DisplayPort 1.4 plus HDMI 2.1 triple-display rear output configuration as the B650M D3HP, making it a practical choice for multi-monitor office and workstation deployments on Ryzen processors with integrated graphics. Debug LEDs aid boot-failure diagnosis, Q-Flash Plus allows BIOS updates without any CPU or RAM installed, and EZ-Latch on the primary PCIe x16 slot handles tool-free GPU removal. The X3D Turbo Mode BIOS feature is included, optimising performance for Ryzen 9000 X3D processors with a single BIOS toggle.

CPU overclocking is supported on B850. The power delivery is sized for mainstream builds — the single 8-pin ATX12V (no supplementary 4-pin) and entry-level VRM are best suited to 65–105W TDP processors. Sustained all-core overclocking on high-TDP Ryzen 9 chips is outside the comfort zone of this board.

LAN speed is 1 Gigabit only — this board does not include 2.5GbE. For 2.5GbE at the B850M tier, the B850M Aorus Elite or B850M Gaming X WiFi6E is the appropriate step up.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8200 (OC). M2A_CPU is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000, supporting both 2580 and 2280 form factors. M2B_CPU is CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000 and Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1, supporting 22110 and 2280, and drops to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2. Neither slot includes an M.2 heatsink — thermal pads or an aftermarket heatsink are advisable for sustained NVMe workloads. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional storage, with RAID 0/1/5/10 for NVMe (RAID 5 on Ryzen 9000 only) and RAID 0/1/10 for SATA.

Only two M.2 slots are present — no chipset-connected third M.2 slot. Builds requiring three NVMe drives will need to use SATA for the additional drive.

For sustained NVMe workloads, thermal pads or an aftermarket M.2 heatsink are recommended.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O provides six USB ports: one USB Type-C Gen1 (5 Gbps, CPU), three USB Gen1 Type-A (5 Gbps — one from CPU, two from chipset), one USB 2.0 (CPU), and one USB 2.0 (chipset), alongside dual DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 144Hz each), HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz), a PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port, and Q-Flash Plus button. Front panel connectivity includes a USB Type-C Gen1 header, a Gen1 header (2 ports), and two USB 2.0 headers (4 ports). Realtek 1GbE handles wired networking — no Wi-Fi is included and no M.2 Key E slot is present. Fan headers total four: CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT/pump, one system fan, and one system fan/pump, all 4-pin PWM/DC with Smart Fan 6 and FAN STOP. RGB Fusion 2.0 is supported via two Addressable Gen2 (ARGB) headers and one standard RGB LED header. Debug boot LEDs (CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT) provide rapid boot-failure diagnostics.

Professional-Grade B840 Micro-ATX with Wi-Fi 6E

The PRO B840M-P WiFi6E brings MSI’s professional PRO series positioning to the B840 Micro-ATX tier, delivering a business and productivity-focused AM5 platform with Wi-Fi 6E, Realtek 2.5GbE, and a well-rounded USB stack in a compact 244 mm × 244 mm footprint. The 6-layer, 2oz copper PCB with 7 W/mk MOSFET thermal pads and Core Boost technology provides stable, sustained power delivery for everyday Ryzen builds and professional multi-core workloads. Both M.2 slots are CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 — a meaningful differentiator over boards that route the secondary M.2 through slower chipset lanes. CUDIMM support (clock driver bypass mode) is included for builders using next-generation memory modules. MSI’s Frozr AI Cooling auto-detects PWM/DC fan modes, and the Flash BIOS Button with Clear CMOS button on the rear panel makes servicing and first-boot preparation straightforward. Notably for a PRO series board, three ARGB and one RGB header are included — giving builders lighting control without stepping to the Gaming series.

Memory overclocking via EXPO profiles is supported up to DDR5-8000+ (OC). If CPU OC is a requirement, step up to a B850 board.

DIMM slots on this board have single-sided latches only — the standard dual-latch release mechanism is not present. Take care when seating and removing memory modules.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 UDIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with EXPO profiles reaching DDR5-8000+ (OC) in optimal 1DPC 1R configurations with Ryzen 9000. CUDIMM support in clock driver bypass mode is available. Both M.2 slots are CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s): M2_1 and M2_2 both support 2280 and 2260 form factors. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle traditional drive storage, with RAID 0/1/10 for SATA and RAID 0/1 for NVMe.

Neither M.2 slot supports the 22110 extended form factor — both are limited to 2280 and 2260. If a 110mm enterprise or extended NVMe drive is required, a board with 22110 support is needed.

M2_2 drops from PCIe 4.0 x4 to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8500/8300 processors specifically. All other Ryzen 7000, 8000 (Phoenix 1), and 9000 variants run both M.2 slots at the full PCIe 4.0 x4 rate.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear panel provides nine USB ports: one USB 10 Gbps Type-C, one USB 10 Gbps Type-A, two USB 5 Gbps Type-A, and four USB 2.0, alongside HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz), a Clear CMOS button, dual antenna connectors for Wi-Fi, and a Flash BIOS Button — no CPU or RAM required to update firmware. There is no DisplayPort on this board. Front panel USB headers cover two USB 5 Gbps Type-A, one USB 5 Gbps Type-C, and four USB 2.0. Realtek 8125D 2.5GbE handles wired networking. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 160 MHz, MU-MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.3 are pre-installed in the M.2 Key-E slot. Fan headers total four: one CPU fan, one combo pump/system fan, and three system fan headers. Three Addressable V2 (ARGB) headers and one RGB LED header support Mystic Light. Four EZ Debug LEDs (CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT) plus an EZ Memory Detection LED assist boot troubleshooting.
