No standalone RGB software: RGB control requires compatible motherboard software (ASUS Aura Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, MSI Mystic Light, or ASRock Polychrome Sync). Ensure your motherboard supports one of these ecosystems before purchasing.

Performance & XMP 2.0

The PVSR48G360C0 runs at DDR4-3600 (PC4-28800) with CL20-26-26-46 timings at 1.35V. Without XMP enabled, the module defaults to DDR4-2666 at 19-19-19-43 at stock. CL20 at DDR4-3600 is a looser primary timing profile than CL16 or CL18 alternatives at this frequency — the performance advantage over DDR4-3200 CL16 modules comes from raw bandwidth at the higher clock rate rather than lower absolute latency. DDR4-3600 remains the recognised sweet spot for AMD Ryzen DDR4 performance at the platform’s optimal 1:1 FCLK ratio.

XMP must be enabled for rated speed: This module defaults to DDR4-2666 without XMP 2.0 activated in BIOS (or DOCP/EXPO on AMD). Enable XMP to unlock DDR4-3600 at CL20-26-26-46. Updating your BIOS before installation is recommended for best compatibility.

CL20 note: The CL20 primary timing at DDR4-3600 is looser than the CL16 or CL18 found on some competing modules at the same frequency. The bandwidth advantage from the higher clock speed is the primary performance benefit over DDR4-3200 CL16 alternatives.

The Silicon Motion SM2269XT controller paired with 176-layer 3D TLC NAND delivers genuine PCIe Gen 4 performance in that compact package — a combination not always available at this form factor.

What’s in the Box — Including an Opening Pick

Patriot includes a slim graphene heatshield fitted to the drive and an opening pick for chassis disassembly. The high-efficiency slim graphene heatshield combined with an embedded thermal sensor for throttling means the VP4000 Mini is built to sustain performance through long gaming sessions. The opening pick is a practical inclusion — handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally require careful chassis opening to access the M.2 slot, and having the right tool in the box saves a separate purchase.

SmartECC, HMB, and Thermal Throttling

The VP4000 Mini utilises SmartECC technology, thermal throttling, and support for SMART and TRIM commands, combined with Host Memory Buffer and ONFi 4.2 mode flash support of up to 1,600MT/s. SmartECC is Patriot’s LDPC-based error correction implementation — detecting and correcting bit errors to protect data integrity over the drive’s lifetime. HMB allocates a portion of system RAM to supplement the DRAM-less controller, improving mapping table performance on Windows 10/11 and supported handheld OS environments.

500GB Write Speed — Know What to Expect

The 500GB VP4000 Mini is rated at 4,700MB/s read and 1,700MB/s write. The 5,000MB/s read and 3,500MB/s write figures apply to the 1TB and 2TB variants, which benefit from more NAND dies available for parallel write operations. For a handheld gaming device used primarily for game storage and OS, 1,700MB/s write is more than adequate — significantly faster than any previous storage tier and well-suited to this use case.

5-Year Warranty — Rare at This Form Factor

A 5-year warranty on an M.2 2230 drive is uncommon. Most competing 2230 SSDs in this tier carry 3-year coverage; the VP4000 Mini’s 5-year warranty reflects Patriot’s confidence in the 176-layer TLC NAND and thermal management design. TBW for the 500GB model is 110TB — adequate for gaming device storage where the primary workload is sequential reads rather than sustained writes.

M.2 2230 form factor — not 2280 — the VP4000 Mini is 30mm long, not the standard 80mm. It is designed for devices with M.2 2230 slots: Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, select ultrabooks, and compact mini-PCs. It will not seat correctly in a standard desktop motherboard M.2 2280 slot without an adapter bracket.

PCIe Gen 4 slot recommended — full 4,700MB/s read performance requires a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 slot. The drive is backwards compatible with Gen 3 at approximately half the rated speeds.

500GB write speed — the 500GB model is rated at 1,700MB/s write versus 3,500MB/s on the 1TB and 2TB variants. For game storage and OS workloads on a handheld device this is not a practical limitation.

DRAM-less design — the VP4000 Mini uses HMB rather than on-drive DRAM. Full HMB benefit requires Windows 10/11 or a compatible NVMe driver.
