The ST5000LM000 uses a 15mm z-height, making it incompatible with standard 7mm and 9.5mm laptop bays. Verify your enclosure or system supports 15mm 2.5″ drives before ordering. Additionally, this drive uses SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) technology. SMR is used across the 5TB, 4TB, 3TB, and 2TB BarraCuda 2.5″ lineup. SMR drives offer excellent sequential read/write performance and cost-effective high capacity, but are not recommended for use as primary drives in RAID arrays or write-intensive NAS configurations.
