DDR5: What’s New

The ADATA Value DDR5-4800 introduces a generation of architectural improvements over DDR4 that go well beyond raw speed. ADATA DDR5 memory modules deliver frequencies of up to 4800MT/s and feature bandwidth of 38.4GB/s — 50% higher than DDR4-3200 — operating on just 1.1V, making them 8% more power-efficient than DDR4.

Previously only available to server-grade memory, DDR5 now comes with on-die ECC (Error Correction Code) to provide additional protection against single-bit errors inside DDR5 arrays. ADATA DDR5 utilises on-module voltage regulation with a Power Management IC (PMIC), resulting in better signalling. DDR5 doubles the number of bank groups while keeping the number of banks per bank group the same compared to DDR4, allowing for higher capacities within the same physical footprint.

Performance Profile

The AD5U48008G runs at DDR5-4800 (PC5-38400) with CL40-40-40-77 timings at 1.1V via JEDEC specification — no XMP profile, no BIOS configuration required. CL40 is the standard JEDEC latency for DDR5-4800, consistent across all entry-level DDR5 modules at this speed grade. While the absolute CAS number is higher than DDR4 equivalents, the shorter clock cycle at 4800MHz means actual latency in nanoseconds is comparable to DDR4-3200 CL22 — and raw bandwidth is substantially higher.

⚠️ No XMP on this module: DDR5-4800 is achieved natively via JEDEC specification — no BIOS tuning required.

DDR5 Platform Requirements

DDR5 is not compatible with DDR4 motherboards or slots. DDR5 UDIMMs use a different 288-pin connector that is physically incompatible with DDR4 sockets despite sharing the same pin count. DDR5 requires a DDR5-capable motherboard and CPU — on Intel, this means 12th generation Alder Lake or later on a DDR5-capable board (Z690/B660/H670 and later); on AMD, this means Ryzen 7000 series (AM5) or later.

⚠️ DDR5 is not compatible with DDR4 slots: Verify that both your motherboard and CPU support DDR5 before purchasing. Many Intel 12th and 13th gen motherboards were available in both DDR4 and DDR5 variants — confirm your specific board’s memory type before ordering.
