The 2.5 GbE Difference

Most GPON ONUs ship with a 1 GbE LAN port, which becomes the bottleneck on high-speed fibre plans — GPON’s 2.488 Gbps downstream capacity is wasted the moment it hits a 1 Gbps Ethernet port. The WaveFiber ONU addresses this directly with a 1/2.5 GbE auto-negotiating RJ45 LAN port, delivering up to 2.5 Gbps downlink and 1.2 Gbps uplink, provided your downstream router or switch also has a 2.5 GbE port to terminate it. For ISPs offering gigabit-plus tier plans, this is the unit that makes those speeds usable end-to-end.

GPON Specifications

The WaveFiber ONU is compliant with the ITU-G.984 GPON standard, with downstream at 2488.32 Mbit/s (1490 nm) and upstream at 1244.16 Mbit/s (1310 nm), over an SC/APC WAN port at a maximum physical reach of 20 km. Optical TX output is 1.5 to 5 dBm; RX sensitivity ranges from −8 to −28 dBm, with GEM Port Encryption for security at the optical layer.

UISP Platform Integration

The unit supports auto-discovery and remote provisioning via standard OMCI protocols and integrates with the Ubiquiti UISP platform for unified monitoring, customer diagnostics, and performance management across large ONU fleets. Remote reset, remote reboot, remote firmware upgrade, and VLAN support are included, along with a web server, telnet access, NAT, bridging and routing, firewall features, and application passthrough.

OLT Compatibility

Supported OLTs are the UISP-FIBER-OLT-XGS, UF-OLT, and UF-OLT-4. This is a Ubiquiti ecosystem device — it is designed for and tested against Ubiquiti OLT hardware. Use with third-party OLTs may work via standard OMCI but is not officially supported.

Optical Signal LEDs

A distinctive feature is the three-LED PON signal strength indicator: all off during bootup; 1× red for signal too low (below −28 dBm); 1× white for low signal (≥ −28 dBm); 2× white for good signal (≥ −25 dBm); 3× white for strong signal (≥ −11 dBm); and 1× red + 2× white for signal too strong (≥ −8 dBm). This makes fibre alignment and fault diagnosis at the premises genuinely fast without a separate optical power meter.

Power and Form Factor

The unit measures 76.5 × 76.5 × 26.4 mm and weighs 78 g, with a polycarbonate enclosure supporting desktop or wall mounting. Power is via 24V passive PoE (2-pair, 4/5+; 7/8−), with a supported voltage range of 20–28V DC and a maximum power consumption of 5W. A PoE adapter is included with single-unit purchases; multi-packs (5- and 20-unit) do not include individual adapters.
