AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X 3.5GHz 12-Core TR4

R12,955.00 inc. VAT

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X is a 12-core, 24-thread high-end desktop (HEDT) processor built on Zen+ architecture, designed for professionals, content creators, and power users who need a workstation-class platform with exceptional I/O and memory bandwidth. With a base clock of 3.5 GHz and a boost clock reaching 4.3 GHz, backed by 32MB of L3 cache and a 180W TDP, it sits on AMD’s TR4 platform with 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes and quad-channel DDR4 memory — capabilities no mainstream desktop platform can match. A discrete GPU is required as there is no integrated graphics.

Description

HEDT Workstation Performance on the TR4 Platform

The 2920X is built on GlobalFoundries’ 12nm process using AMD’s Zen+ Colfax architecture, packing 12 cores and 24 threads into AMD’s TR4 socket — the same platform that houses the rest of the 2nd-gen Threadripper lineup. The Threadripper platform’s defining advantage over mainstream desktop processors is its I/O scale: 64 PCIe Gen 3 lanes give you the bandwidth headroom to run multiple GPUs, large NVMe storage arrays, and high-speed networking cards simultaneously, without compromising connectivity between any of them. Quad-channel DDR4 memory further separates it from mainstream platforms, delivering substantially higher memory bandwidth for data-intensive workloads.

Workload Performance and Platform Features

The 2920X includes Precision Boost 2, Extended Frequency Range 2, and Precision Boost Overdrive — a full suite of performance enhancement technologies for automated and manual frequency tuning. Dynamic Local Mode automatically switches the processor between Creator Mode for parallelised workloads and Game Mode for gaming, optimising thread scheduling for the active workload without requiring manual intervention or a system restart. The unlocked multiplier makes overclocking straightforward, and AMD Ryzen Master provides a clean interface for monitoring and tuning.

Platform Considerations

The 2920X requires an AMD X399 chipset motherboard with the TR4 socket — a dedicated HEDT platform separate from mainstream AM4 boards. The X399 platform supports both 1st and 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors, with a BIOS update required on some boards. ECC memory is supported via compatible motherboards, which is a meaningful capability for professional and reliability-critical workloads. Note that this is a mature platform — new X399 motherboards are no longer in production, but the used and refurbished market remains well-stocked for builders targeting value-oriented workstation builds.

⚠️ No integrated graphics — a discrete GPU must be installed for display output.

⚠️ No cooler included — a premium 360mm AIO or high-performance workstation cooler is essential for this 180W processor.
