The PowerEdge R640 is Dell’s 14th-generation 1U two-socket rack server — the go-to platform for dense data centre deployments where performance per rack unit matters. This unit comes pre-fitted with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8176 processors: each is a 28-core, 56-thread Skylake-SP CPU running at 2.1GHz with a 3.8GHz Turbo Boost ceiling and a 38.5MB L3 cache. Combined, you’re working with 56 physical cores and 112 threads from the factory — a serious foundation for virtualisation hosts, HPC workloads, and large database deployments.

The 10 x 2.5″ SFF hot-swap backplane supports SAS, SATA, and — depending on the backplane variant fitted — NVMe drives, giving you flexibility in how you build out storage. Dual redundant 750W PSUs are installed, providing hot-swap power redundancy out of the box.

Memory and Storage — Your Choice

The R640 has 24 DDR4 memory slots — 12 per processor — supporting a maximum of 3TB of RAM. This unit ships with all 24 slots empty, so you select the capacity, speed, and DIMM type that suits your workload and budget. A RAID controller will be required to make use of the drive bays — compatible options include the PERC H330, H730P, and H740P.

Management

Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller, providing out-of-band access for remote console, power management, firmware updates, and server provisioning. QuickSync 2 is supported for mobile-based management access. The R640 integrates with Dell OpenManage Enterprise for centralised multi-server management.
