Description

AM5 on a Budget — Without Cutting the Essentials

The A620M DS3H is Gigabyte’s most accessible AM5 Micro-ATX offering, bringing Socket AM5 compatibility with Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 Series processors to a price point where the AM5 platform becomes genuinely attainable for tight-budget builds. The 5+2+2 phase digital VRM handles mainstream processor loads cleanly, with a single 8-pin ATX12V connector covering power delivery without complexity. Four DDR5 DIMM slots are a notable inclusion at this tier — most competing budget boards offer only two — supporting dual-channel operation up to 256 GB with AMD EXPO and XMP memory profiles. The board carries Gigabyte’s Q-Flash Plus feature for BIOS updates without a CPU or RAM installed, a useful convenience for builders who may need to update firmware before their processor is officially listed.

⚠️ The A620 chipset does not support CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking via AMD EXPO and XMP profiles is supported. If CPU OC headroom is needed, B850 is the appropriate step up.

⚠️ The VRM on this board is best matched to 65W TDP processors for sustained workloads. It will run 105W CPUs at stock but is not designed for high-TDP sustained multi-core loads. For Ryzen 9 builds or any heavy sustained workloads, a B650 or higher board is recommended.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support up to 256 GB across dual channels, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles enabling speeds up to DDR5-8000 (OC). The single M.2 connector (M2A_CPU) is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 across all supported CPU generations including Ryzen 8000 Phoenix variants. It supports both the standard 2280 form factor and the longer 2580 form factor — an uncommon inclusion that accommodates extended-length enterprise NVMe drives. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports complement M.2 storage, and RAID 0/1/10 is supported for both SATA and NVMe storage devices.

⚠️ Only one M.2 slot is present. Builds requiring two or more M.2 NVMe drives will need to supplement with SATA SSDs or step up to a board with additional M.2 slots.

⚠️ Unlike most recent AM5 boards, the primary PCIe x16 slot does not reach PCIe 5.0 speeds — it runs at PCIe 4.0 x16 with Ryzen 7000/9000, PCIe 4.0 x8 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1, and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2. Current discrete GPUs perform without meaningful real-world difference at PCIe 4.0 x16, but this is worth noting for future GPU generations.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear I/O distinguishes itself from most budget AM5 boards by offering three display outputs simultaneously: DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 4K 144Hz), HDMI 2.1 (up to 4K 60Hz), and a legacy D-Sub/VGA port (up to 1920×1200 60Hz) — triple-display operation is supported with an iGPU-equipped processor. USB on the rear includes one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C, one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, and four USB 2.0 Type-A ports, plus a PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port for legacy peripherals. Realtek Gigabit LAN (1GbE) handles wired networking — note this is 1GbE, not 2.5GbE. Front panel connectivity is covered by one USB 3.2 Gen1 header and one USB 2.0 header. Fan headers consist of one CPU fan and two system fan headers. RGB headers include one addressable RGB (ARGB) header and one standard RGB header for lighting control via Gigabyte’s RGB Fusion software.

⚠️ LAN speed is 1 Gigabit only — this board does not include 2.5GbE. If faster wired networking is a requirement, a USB or PCIe 2.5GbE adapter can be added, or a board with an onboard 2.5G port should be considered.

⚠️ No Wi-Fi module is included and no M.2 Key E slot is present for a wireless module. A USB or PCIe Wi-Fi adapter is required for wireless connectivity.

⚠️ Integrated display output (DisplayPort, HDMI, D-Sub) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those builds.
