Description
The Budget Gaming Benchmark — Alder Lake’s Best Value.
When the i5-12400F launched, it forced a re-evaluation of what budget gaming CPUs should cost. With six full-fat Performance cores — no efficiency cores, no hybrid compromises — running at up to 4.4 GHz single-core boost and a rock-solid 4.0 GHz all-core turbo, it delivered performance that genuinely challenged AMD’s Ryzen 5 5600X at a significantly lower price. Years on, it remains an outstanding value proposition for LGA1700 builds.
Six Pure P-Cores — No Hybrid Complications
Unlike higher-end Alder Lake processors, the i5-12400F uses only Performance cores — six of them, each with Hyper-Threading for 12 simultaneous threads. This makes it exceptionally predictable in gaming workloads, where game engine thread scheduling is straightforward and consistent. There are no efficiency cores to cause scheduling complexity, and no trade-offs in single-threaded gaming IPC.
DDR4 and DDR5 — Your Choice
The i5-12400F officially supports both DDR4-3200 and DDR5-4800 across dual memory channels, giving builders the flexibility to use existing DDR4 kits or invest in DDR5 for future-proofing. Dual-channel configuration maximises memory bandwidth to 76.8 GB/s with DDR5-4800.
PCIe 5.0 & PCIe 4.0 Support
The i5-12400F provides PCIe 5.0 x16 for the primary graphics card slot and PCIe 4.0 for additional lanes — meaning the latest generation GPUs and NVMe SSDs are fully supported without bandwidth limitations, and the platform keeps pace with current-generation hardware.
65W TDP — Runs Cool, Stays Quiet
With a 65W base TDP (117W maximum turbo power), the i5-12400F is easy to cool — the included Laminar RM1 air cooler is adequate for everyday and gaming workloads. Aftermarket coolers are recommended for sustained heavy workloads or noise-sensitive builds, but this chip runs comfortably cool without exotic cooling.
Not Unlocked — Not Intended for Overclocking
The i5-12400F has a locked multiplier and is not designed for overclocking. Builders seeking an unlocked Alder Lake chip should look at the i5-12600K or i5-12600KF. For most users, the generous all-core boost and efficient Alder Lake IPC make overclocking unnecessary.
⚠️ Note: The i5-12400F has no integrated graphics — a dedicated GPU is required in all configurations. For a version with Intel UHD 730 integrated graphics, see the i5-12400 (without the F suffix).
