Description

The AERO D: TRX50 Workstation, No Compromises

The TRX50 AERO D is Gigabyte’s flagship TRX50 workstation motherboard, designed around the AMD sTR5 platform for Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9000/7000 WX-Series and Threadripper 9000/7000 Series processors. The 28-phase all-digital VRM delivers the sustained, stable power delivery these high-core-count platforms demand across multi-day rendering, training, and simulation workloads, backed by dual 8-pin ATX12V connectors and a purpose-built thermal design with enlarged heatsinks and a VRM area heatpipe. The EATX footprint accommodates triple PCIe x16 expansion, four M.2 slots, eight SATA ports, and a rear panel populated with workstation-class connectivity — dual USB4 Type-C at 40 Gbps each, four Gen2 Type-A, dual LAN (10GbE + 2.5GbE), and Wi-Fi 7. Onboard power, reset, and Clear CMOS buttons with a noise detection header and dual temperature sensor headers complete a platform clearly built for serious system builders and professional environments. The AERO branding reflects Gigabyte’s creator-focused positioning — clean aesthetics, grey/silver accents, and a layout tuned for productivity rather than gaming RGB excess.

⚠️ ECC RDIMM (or RDIMM-3DS) memory is required on the sTR5 platform — standard unbuffered consumer DDR5 DIMMs are not compatible. Quad-channel operation requires all four DIMM slots populated with matched ECC RDIMM modules. Verify memory against Gigabyte’s validated support list before purchasing.

⚠️ Both 8-pin ATX12V connectors must be connected for proper system operation. Ensure your PSU has sufficient 8-pin EPS connectors and adequate wattage for the Threadripper platform — 1000W+ PSUs are strongly recommended for high-core-count Threadripper builds under sustained load.

⚠️ The sTR5 socket uses AMD’s TR5 rail/carrier frame CPU installation mechanism, which differs from AM5. A liquid cooler rated for sTR5 is strongly recommended — verify cooler compatibility before purchasing.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 ECC RDIMM/RDIMM-3DS slots support quad-channel operation up to 1 TB (256 GB per DIMM), with EXPO and XMP OC profile support up to DDR5-8000 (OC). Storage is workstation-grade across four M.2 slots: M2C_CPU and M2A_CPU/M2B_CPU are CPU-connected at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s each), supporting 25110/2280 and 22110/2280 form factors respectively — three simultaneous Gen5 NVMe drives from the CPU alone. M2D_CPU is a fourth CPU-connected M.2 running at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s), supporting 2280. All four M.2 slots carry M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink coverage. Eight SATA 6Gb/s ports are provided via the CPU+chipset, with RAID 0/1/10 supported for both SATA and NVMe storage.

⚠️ Three of the four M.2 slots run at PCIe 5.0 x4 — the fourth (M2D_CPU) is PCIe 4.0 x4. For maximum NVMe performance, populate M2C_CPU, M2A_CPU, and M2B_CPU first.

Expansion and Connectivity

Three PCIe x16 slots are all CPU-connected: PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 run at PCIe 5.0 x16 mode, while PCIEX16_3 runs at PCIe 4.0 x16 — all supporting the full Threadripper PRO 9000/7000 and Threadripper 9000/7000 lineup. The PCIe UD Slot X design provides reinforced slot strength for heavy multi-GPU or accelerator installations. Networking is dual-stack: Marvell AQtion AQC113C 10GbE (LAN1) handles high-throughput NAS, storage, and server connectivity, while Realtek 2.5GbE provides standard wired connectivity. Two rear USB4 Type-C ports at 40 Gbps each are provided via an Intel JHL8540 controller, alongside four USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps, red), four USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A (5 Gbps), and two RJ-45 LAN ports. A rear DisplayPort In and a USB4 Type-C with DisplayPort alt-mode support display connectivity for iGPU or capture scenarios. Audio is handled by the premium Realtek ALC4080 CODEC on the rear panel with DTS:X Ultra support, and ALC897 for front panel. Ten fan and pump headers — CPU_FAN, CPU OPT/pump, four system fans, and four system fan/pump headers — provide comprehensive thermal management for complex multi-fan and multi-radiator workstation builds.

⚠️ Wi-Fi 7 (Qualcomm QCNCM865, 802.11be, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 320 MHz) + Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard. Wi-Fi 7 features require Windows 11 SV3 — there is no Windows 10 driver. On older Windows versions the adapter operates at Wi-Fi 6/6E speeds.

⚠️ Wi-Fi 7 6 GHz band availability is subject to local regulations.

💡 The front panel USB Type-C Gen2x2 header (20 Gbps, chipset) and rear USB4 ports (40 Gbps) cover the full USB performance range for docking stations, high-speed storage, and displays.
