The B650M PG Lightning is ASRock’s Phantom Gaming-branded entry into the AMD B650 Micro-ATX space, offering a step up from A620 in power delivery, PCIe Gen5 storage support, and CPU overclocking capability. The 6+2+1 phase Dr.MOS power stage is rated for 120W-class CPUs and handles the full Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 lineup confidently in day-to-day operation. The 6-layer PCB contributes to signal stability and thermal efficiency under load, and the single 8-pin ATX12V connector keeps the build tidy without any supplementary power demands.

⚠️ The B650 chipset supports CPU overclocking, but the 6+2+1 Dr.MOS power stage is best matched to processors in the 65–105W TDP range. High-wattage chips like the Ryzen 9 9950X running sustained all-core workloads may push the VRM hard over extended periods — a well-ventilated case with adequate airflow over the VRM area is recommended for those configurations.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel memory up to 192 GB, with XMP and AMD EXPO profile support for one-click overclocking up to DDR5-7200+ and beyond. The headline storage feature is the Blazing M.2 slot (M2_1), a CPU-connected PCIe Gen5x4 slot delivering up to 128 Gb/s — a meaningful differentiator over A620 and many competing B650 boards in this price bracket. A second CPU-connected Hyper M.2 (M2_2) runs at PCIe Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s), and a third chipset-connected M.2 (M2_3) runs at PCIe Gen4x2 (32 Gb/s). Four SATA3 ports round out storage, and RAID 0/1/10 is supported across both SATA and NVMe.

⚠️ M2_3 runs at PCIe Gen4x2 (32 Gb/s), not the full Gen4x4 bandwidth of M2_2 — factor this in when choosing which drive goes in which slot. For maximum NVMe throughput, prioritise M2_1 (Gen5) and M2_2 (Gen4x4).

Connectivity and I/O

Rear I/O is well-stocked for the price tier: USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C (10 Gb/s) and Gen2 Type-A (10 Gb/s) flank two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A and four USB 2.0 ports, alongside HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC for systems using a Ryzen CPU with integrated graphics. A Realtek Dragon 2.5G LAN port handles wired networking, and the BIOS Flashback button allows firmware updates without a CPU or RAM installed. Front panel connectivity includes a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C header and two USB 3.2 Gen1 headers covering four additional ports. A Thunderbolt AIC connector supports ASRock’s Thunderbolt 4 add-in card for those who need TB4 connectivity.

⚠️ This is the wired-only variant — no WiFi module is included. An M.2 Key E slot is present for an optional type 2230 WiFi/BT module (not supplied). If wireless is needed out of the box, look to the B650M PG Lightning WiFi instead.

⚠️ Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 series CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those builds.
