The B850 Gaming Plus WiFi is a meaningful step above the B840 Gaming Plus WiFi on every hardware axis that matters for a sustained gaming or workstation build. The 12+2+1 Duet Rail Power System on a 6-layer, 2oz copper PCB with server-grade material quality and dual 8-pin ATX12V connectors provides substantially better power delivery and thermal headroom than entry-level B850 boards — handling the full Ryzen 7000/9000 range at stock with genuine OC headroom. The Frozr Guard thermal package (7 W/mk MOSFET thermal pads, Extended Heatsink, choke thermal pads, and EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II) completes the thermal management picture. Networking is highlighted by Realtek 8126VB 5GbE LAN — a notable step up from the typical 2.5GbE found at this tier — alongside Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 320 MHz, MLO, MU-MIMO). A supplemental 8-pin PCIe power connector (PCIE_PWR) provides additional power headroom for power-hungry graphics cards without the card drawing entirely from the slot. ⚠️ Wi-Fi 7 features (MLO, 6 GHz, 4KQAM, Bluetooth 5.4) require Windows 11 version 24H2. On earlier Windows versions the module operates at Wi-Fi 6E speeds.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 UDIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8200+ (OC) in optimal 1DPC 1R configurations with Ryzen 9000. CUDIMM support in clock driver bypass mode is available. Three M.2 slots cover performance and secondary storage: M2_1 is CPU-connected at PCIe 5.0 x4 (128 Gb/s) with Ryzen 7000/9000 and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000, supporting 2280 and 2260 form factors; M2_2 is CPU-connected at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s), supporting 22110 and 2280; M2_3 is chipset-connected at PCIe 4.0 x2 (32 Gb/s), supporting 2280 and 2260. All three M.2 slots are covered by EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II heatsinks with tool-free clips. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports provide traditional drive support, with RAID 0/1 for both SATA and NVMe.

⚠️ M2_3 (chipset) runs at PCIe 4.0 x2 (32 Gb/s) — suitable for secondary or lower-demand NVMe storage. Prioritise M2_1 and M2_2 for performance drives.

⚠️ The chipset PCIe slots share bandwidth: PCI_E3 (PCIe 4.0 x4) drops to x2 when any device is installed in PCI_E2 or PCI_E4. Plan expansion card layout accordingly.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear panel provides a strong connectivity stack: two USB 10 Gbps Type-C, one USB 10 Gbps Type-A, one USB 5 Gbps Type-A, four USB 2.0, a DisplayPort 1.2 (4K 60Hz) for iGPU-equipped processors, S/PDIF optical out, dual SMA antenna connectors, Flash BIOS Button, and Clear CMOS button. Front panel USB is generous: four USB 5 Gbps Type-A, one USB 5 Gbps Type-C, and four USB 2.0. Realtek 8126VB 5GbE LAN handles wired networking. ⚠️ The iGPU display output is DisplayPort 1.2 (4K 60Hz) — not HDMI. This is the only display output on the rear panel; a discrete GPU is required for HDMI output.

⚠️ Integrated display output (DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.

💡 The supplemental 8-pin PCIE_PWR connector on the motherboard provides additional power to the primary PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, reducing current draw from the graphics card’s own power connectors during peak loads. This is particularly useful for high-TDP GPUs.
