Description
Compact B850 with a Practical Feature Set
The B850M-X WiFi occupies a sensible position in the AM5 stack: it brings B850’s CPU overclocking capability and PCIe Gen5 M.2 storage support into a Micro-ATX footprint at a lower price than most B850 boards, while keeping the build experience clean and uncomplicated. The 6+1+1 phase Dr.MOS power stage on a 6-layer PCB is sized for everyday Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 builds — efficient and adequate for the mainstream CPU range without over-engineering the platform. A single 8-pin ATX12V connector handles power delivery, keeping PSU compatibility broad and cable routing simple.
⚠️ B850 supports CPU overclocking, but the 6+1+1 Dr.MOS VRM is best matched to 65–105W TDP processors. It will run higher-wattage chips like the Ryzen 9 9950X at stock, but sustained all-core overclocking on top-end CPUs is outside its comfort zone thermally. This board is ideal for mid-range Ryzen 7000/9000 builds rather than enthusiast overclocking rigs.
Memory and Storage
Two DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 128 GB, with XMP and AMD EXPO profiles enabling DDR5-8200+ (OC) out of the box. The storage layout is clean and practical: M2_1 is a CPU-connected Blazing M.2 running at PCIe Gen5x4 (128 Gb/s) with an M.2 heatsink included, while M2_2 is a CPU-connected Hyper M.2 at PCIe Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s) supporting both 2260 and 2280 form factors. Four SATA3 ports round out the storage options, with RAID 0/1/10 supported across both SATA and NVMe. The M.2 heatsink on M2_1 uses an anti-drop screw design for straightforward, frustration-free installation.
⚠️ Only two DIMM slots are present — maximum capacity is 128 GB across two sticks. Dual-channel requires both slots to be populated with a matched pair. If four-DIMM support or higher memory capacity is a requirement, step up to the B850M Pro RS WiFi or B850 Pro RS WiFi.
⚠️ M2_2 drops from Gen4x4 to Gen4x2 with Ryzen 8000 (Phoenix 2) processors. M2_1 also runs at Gen4x4 (not Gen5x4) on all Ryzen 8000 variants regardless of Phoenix revision. Full Gen5 M.2 speeds require a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 series CPU.
Connectivity and I/O
Rear I/O covers the essentials cleanly: one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C, three USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI 2.1 (4K 120Hz), and DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC for iGPU-equipped CPUs. A front panel USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C header is included for modern case panels. Onboard Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax/axe, 2.4/5/6 GHz, MU-MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.2 are built in, with Realtek Dragon 2.5G LAN for wired networking. Fan headers include two CPU fan connectors, three chassis fan connectors, and a dedicated AIO pump header — more than adequate for standard and AIO-cooled builds. An onboard thermistor cable header (T_SENSOR1) allows temperature monitoring of custom locations within the chassis. RGB headers consist of one standard RGB and three addressable ARGB headers with Polychrome SYNC support.
⚠️ The primary GPU slot (PCIE1) is PCIe 4.0 x16, not PCIe 5.0 — the board’s Gen5 lane is routed exclusively to M2_1. Current-generation discrete GPUs run without issue at Gen4x16 speeds; real-world gaming performance is unaffected. This is a common architecture at this price tier.
⚠️ Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs do not include an iGPU — a discrete GPU is required in those configurations.
