Description
Full AM5 Platform in a 170 mm × 170 mm Footprint
The B650I AX makes a genuine case for the Mini-ITX form factor on the AM5 platform: it brings CPU overclocking support, Wi-Fi 6E with a dedicated 6 GHz band, Realtek 2.5GbE, DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1, and Gigabyte’s Smart Fan 6 multi-sensor fan control — all in the standard 170 mm × 170 mm Mini-ITX footprint. The 5+2+1 phase digital VRM is sized appropriately for the platform, handling mainstream Ryzen builds cleanly with smart thermal management, and EZ-Latch on the sole PCIe x16 slot makes graphics card swaps tool-free — a welcome detail in SFF chassis where PCIe latch access is often awkward. Q-Flash Plus enables BIOS updates without CPU or RAM, which is especially practical in ITX builds where reassembling just to flash BIOS is a genuine inconvenience.
⚠️ The 5+2+1 VRM is best matched to 65W TDP processors under sustained load. Moderate overclocking is possible on lower-TDP chips, but high-TDP Ryzen 9 processors at full all-core load will stress this power stage. For sustained heavy workloads, a 65–105W processor is the recommended pairing.
Memory and Storage
Two DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 128 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8000 (OC). The single M.2 slot is CPU-connected and runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) across all supported CPU generations, supporting 2280 form factor drives. Two SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional drives, and RAID 0 and RAID 1 are supported for both SATA and NVMe storage.
⚠️ Only one M.2 slot is present, accepting 2280 drives only — no 25110 or 2580 extended form factors. Additional NVMe storage is not possible without replacing the primary drive; extra drives must use SATA.
⚠️ Only two SATA ports are present — fewer than the four found on most ATX and Micro-ATX boards. Plan your storage layout accordingly, particularly if HDDs or multiple SATA SSDs are part of the build.
⚠️ RAID support is limited to RAID 0 and RAID 1 only — RAID 10 is not available on this board.
Connectivity and I/O
As with all Mini-ITX boards, expansion is limited to the single PCIe x16 slot — there are no additional PCIe x1 or x4 slots. The rear I/O panel provides a rear USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C (5 Gbps), one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A (5 Gbps), and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports from the CPU and hub — six rear USB ports in total. Front panel connectivity is covered by one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C header (5 Gbps) and one combined USB 3.2 Gen1/USB 2.0 header providing two further ports. DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 144Hz) and HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) serve iGPU-equipped processors on the rear. Wi-Fi 6E (Realtek RTL8852CE, 802.11ax, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 160 MHz) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard, alongside Realtek 2.5GbE LAN. Fan headers total three — one CPU fan, one CPU fan/pump, and one system fan header — all 4-pin PWM/DC with Smart Fan 6 control and FAN STOP. RGB is provided via one addressable ARGB header and one standard RGB header.
⚠️ No USB Gen2 (10 Gbps) or Gen2x2 (20 Gbps) ports are present anywhere on this board — the fastest USB connection is Gen1 at 5 Gbps on both rear and front panel. If 10 Gbps USB is required, a USB hub or expansion card is needed, though expansion options are limited to the single PCIe slot.
⚠️ Only three fan headers are available — significantly fewer than ATX boards. SFF cases with multiple fans will need fan splitters or a dedicated fan hub for full control.
⚠️ Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.
