The B840M Aorus Elite WiFi6E is a deliberate overachiever for its chipset class — Gigabyte has loaded the B840 platform with a feature set that punches significantly above the A620-successor positioning most would expect of it. The 10+2+2 phase digital VRM (5+5 parallel configuration, 60A effective) on a 6-layer, 2oz copper PCB with full VRM Thermal Armor, a 6mm heatpipe, and integrated I/O shield delivers a level of thermal design more commonly associated with mid-range B650 boards. Six fan headers including a CPU fan/pump and system fan/pump header, three ARGB Gen2 headers plus an RGB header, a Multi-Key onboard button (reprogrammable as reset, Direct to BIOS, or Safe Mode), debug boot LEDs, and EZ-Latch Plus on the PCIe x16 slot all reinforce the AORUS branding as more than cosmetic on this board. Wi-Fi 6E (Realtek RTL8852CE, 2.4/5/6 GHz, 160 MHz) and Bluetooth 5.3 are onboard alongside Realtek 2.5GbE LAN, making this a fully wireless-capable build out of the box.

⚠️ The B840 chipset does not support CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking via AMD EXPO and XMP profiles is supported up to DDR5-8200 (OC). If CPU overclocking is a requirement, step up to a B850 board such as the B850M Aorus Elite AX.

⚠️ The 10+2+2 VRM (60A effective) is well-matched to 65–105W TDP processors. High-wattage Ryzen 9 chips can run at stock, but sustained all-core loads on 170W processors are outside the optimal comfort zone of this power stage.

Memory and Storage

Four DDR5 DIMM slots support dual-channel operation up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and XMP profiles reaching DDR5-8200 (OC). Both M.2 slots are CPU-connected: M2A_CPU runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) and supports 2580 and 2280 form factors, while M2B_CPU also runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s) across Ryzen 7000/9000 and supports the same form factors. Both slots feature M.2 Thermal Guard padding with 5 W/mk thermal pads. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle additional drives, with RAID 0/1/10 supported for both SATA and NVMe.

⚠️ M2B_CPU bandwidth is reduced with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 processors — verify CPU-specific M.2 speeds from Gigabyte’s compatibility table for Ryzen 8000 builds.

⚠️ Neither M.2 slot reaches PCIe Gen5 speeds — the maximum M.2 bandwidth on this board is PCIe 4.0 x4 (64 Gb/s). For Gen5 NVMe, a B850 board is required.

Connectivity and I/O

Rear USB is stronger than most B840 boards: one USB Type-C Gen1 (5 Gbps, CPU), two USB Gen1 Type-A (5 Gbps, CPU), four USB 2.0 (CPU+hub), and one USB Gen2 Type-A (10 Gbps, red, chipset) — eight rear USB ports in total. A front panel USB Type-C Gen1 header and a USB Gen1 header cover modern cases, alongside two USB 2.0 headers. A PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port is also present on the rear. DisplayPort 1.4 (4K 144Hz) and HDMI 2.1 (4K 60Hz) serve iGPU-equipped processors. Six fan headers — CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT/pump, three system fan headers, and one system fan/pump header — all 4-pin PWM/DC with Smart Fan 6 control and FAN STOP — give this board an unusually comprehensive fan control layout for a B840 Micro-ATX board. RGB Fusion 2.0 is supported via three Addressable Gen2 (ARGB) headers and one standard RGB LED header. The onboard Multi-Key button provides one-press access to reset, Direct to BIOS, or Safe Mode (user-configurable in BIOS).

⚠️ The primary GPU slot is PCIe 4.0 x16 (Ryzen 7000/9000), dropping to x8 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1 and x4 with Phoenix 2. The secondary slot (PCIEX4) is a PCIe 3.0 x16 physical slot running at x4 mode from the chipset — suitable for add-in cards only, not a second GPU.

⚠️ Integrated display output (HDMI/DisplayPort) requires a Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics. Non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs require a discrete GPU.
